School-based Initiatives: BreakThrough Student Assistance Program
“One key accomplishment was having an active multi-agency collaboration to focus on student well-being. It’s having a focus on prevention and not disease. Everyone is looking through the lens of keeping kids in school.”
The BreakThrough Student Assistance Program helps students and their families to navigate through the school system safely and successfully. BreakThrough welcomes any middle or high school student and his/her family in the Conejo Valley Unified School District. Students may come voluntarily or they may be referred by concerned administrators, staff, parents, or friends due to:
Every Student Matters
- Individual or family stress
- School challenges
- Family changes
- Substance abuse concerns
- Safety concerns
CVUSD students who are suspended or recommended for expulsion for alcohol and/or other drugs, tobacco, e-cigarettes or violence are mandatorily referred to the program by their school site administrators.
Trained staff takes time to listen carefully to learn about the student’s and family’s concerns and determine their strengths. Staff is then able to provide students with links to resources at their schools and in their community. Our mission is to offer confidential services and support academic and personal achievement. One family at a time is how the BreakThrough team supports students and families because every student matters.
